Emotion is necessary. There are reasons we get angry or withdraw when we feel ignored, disrespected or unimportant. As a counselor, my goal is to normalize feelings in order to understand what is often misrepresented in moments of anger or silence. As this article by Hilary Jacobs Hendel keenly points out, “experiencing emotions can be painful, uncomfortable, and sometimes downright scary. But we do need a new way to think about emotions and it begins with learning more about them.”
